Banking in the UK

Opening a business bank account for a UK company.

Written by Rupert Searle

Banking is a separate step

A UK company needs its own business bank account, and the account does not come with the incorporation. Forming the company and opening its account are two different processes. Once the company is registered, Cosmos helps you open an account so the company can be paid, pay others, and hold money in its own name.

The UK banking market

The UK has one of the deepest business banking markets in the world. At one end are the established high street banks, which offer the fullest range of services and the strongest standing, but which tend to be more selective and slower to onboard a new business customer. At the other are the digital business banking providers, which have grown rapidly in the UK and can open an account quickly and with less friction, though they may offer a narrower range of services. Many UK companies use a digital provider to get going and an established bank as they grow. Cosmos will talk through which fits what your company needs.

The challenge for non-resident owners

UK business banking is generally accessible, but it is noticeably harder where the company's owners and directors all live outside the UK. Banks carry their own anti-money-laundering and compliance obligations, and a company with no UK-resident people, and little obvious UK activity, takes more explaining. It is not impossible, and many non-resident-owned UK companies bank successfully, but it calls for a well-prepared application and realistic expectations.

What UK banks look at

Banks weigh a consistent set of things: a clear and credible description of what the business does, complete and consistent documents, a straightforward ownership structure, a sensible account of the company's expected income and payments, and a genuine connection to the UK. A vague or inconsistent application is the one that stalls.

What to expect on timing

A digital provider may open an account within days. An established bank can take considerably longer, particularly where the owners are overseas. Cosmos gives you a realistic view for your specific situation rather than a generic promise, and the bank, not Cosmos, makes the final decision. What Cosmos can do is make the application as strong and complete as possible and match you to providers whose appetite fits your profile.

What Cosmos does

  • Matches you to banks and providers that suit your company's profile, rather than having you apply blindly.

  • Prepares your application and supporting documents so they are complete and consistent.

  • Prepares you for any questions or checks the bank carries out.

  • Stays alongside the application and helps you respond to anything the bank raises.

How to strengthen your application

Be specific and honest about what the business does and who its customers are. Keep your documents complete and consistent. Be ready to explain the expected flow of money through the company. Respond quickly to anything the bank asks. A prepared, transparent applicant is a credible one.
